The Stadium Experience:

Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, PA. So, after visiting a pair of great on campus stadiums at Cal and Stanford, I end up at the home of the Philadelphia Eagles to watch a college game. In case you are tuning in late, and do not know about my bias against college games in pro stadiums, let me re-state how much of a bummy experience it usually is. Temple wasnít much of an exception to that bias. The lower level at Lincoln Financial was packed on the home team side; yet, empty on the visiting teams side. Being stuck in the lower level stinks! You can see the action of the game up close better, which is a definite plus, but Iím not here for a football game alone. Iím here for an experience. The upper decks were closed, because Temple canít filled a pro stadium. Thatís not to knock the University, but I prefer to sit in the upper deck to get great pics of band formations etc. Canít do that in the lower deck. Ok, enough griping. Let me tell you about the visit. All of the Philly professional teams arenas are right near each other. This makes parking a breeze. Not inexpensive, but a breeze. For the Temple game parking was cheap at $10 across from the stadium. Iíll give that a 7. The fanfare was smooth. The team walk was energetic and pumped you up. However, after that walk, well, you had to hang out on your smart phone until the stadium doors opened. - 6. The fans were psyched! Temple isnít known for their football team. Their basketball team carries much more respect, but these were Philly fans, and they root for their teams with such zeal! Ė 8. The band was ok. Again, you have a college band trying to pump you up on an empty arena. It doesnít work very well. Ė 6. Concessions in a pro stadium are, well, expensive! No souvenir cup for the Owls. No Owl logo at the 50 or in the end zone. Did I mention that I hate college games in a pro stadium?Ė 3. All things considered, Temple was a ton of fun.Ė 30. Another quick drive next week to Buffalo to see the Bulls again.
