No. 9 Notre Dame's Kelly has 2-9 road mark vs top 20 teams (Yahoo Sports)

The game between No. 9 Notre Dame and No. 20 Stanford may not carry the pomp and circumstances of some previous meetings, but it does give Irish coach Brian Kelly his latest chance to complete an elusive mission: beat a ranked team on the road. Hopes for a place in a top bowl or even a (long) shot at the College Football Playoff provide No. 9 Notre Dame plenty to play for in its game Saturday at No. 20 Stanford. The 41-8 loss at then-No. 7 Miami marked the eighth straight loss in such games, and during his eight seasons at Notre Dame, Kelly is only 2-9 against the AP top 20 on the road. ''When you go on the road and you're playing top-20 teams, they're difficult competition,'' Kelly said this week as his team prepared for the Cardinal.

Freshman QBs step up as Big 12 season winds down (Yahoo Sports)

Baylor, Texas, Iowa State and Kansas State could also ask a rookie quarterback to step up as the regular season winds down. For the Horned Frogs, Shawn Robinson became the first true freshman quarterback to start for coach Gary Patterson in his 17 seasons as the head coach in last week's 27-3 win over Texas Tech. Robinson - a 6-foot-2, 225-pound native of Desoto, Texas, who won the Gatorade Texas Player of the Year award in 2016 - was an underwhelming 6 of 17 passing for 85 yards in relief of Kenny Hill, who didn't make the trip for undisclosed reasons.

Miami gets bump to No. 2 behind Alabama in playoff rankings (Yahoo Sports)

Miami made a small but potentially significant move up to No. 2 behind Alabama in the College Football Playoff rankings on Tuesday night, with Clemson slipping one spot to three and Oklahoma holding at four. Wisconsin and Auburn remained next up behind the top four in a week when the top half of the selection committee's rankings were mostly unchanged. Georgia, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Penn State and Southern California followed in the same order as they did last week.

Greenstone twice in the head, knocking him to the turf on the sideline during a game against Southeast Missouri on Saturday, Nov. 11. (Tennessee State University via AP)

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- A former Tennessee State player has been charged with aggravated assault with serious bodily injury for punching a coach on the sideline during a game.

Jayhawks strip captaincy from players after OU brouhaha (Yahoo Sports)
Baker Mayfield wasn't the only one to lose his captaincy after the Oklahoma quarterback's antics following last weekend's blowout victory over Kansas. Jayhawks coach David Beaty announced Tuesday that his captains - Dorance Armstrong Jr., Daniel Wise and Joe Dineen Jr. - were also stripped of their status. The trio refused to shake Mayfield's hand during the pregame coin toss, which led to a game filled with vitriol.

Akron claims first MAC East Division title since 2005 (Yahoo Sports)
AKRON, Ohio (AP) -- Ulysees Gilbert returned a fumble 40 yards for a touchdown on the final play of the first half and Akron cruised to a 24-14 victory over Kent State on Tuesday night to claim its first Mid-American Conference East Division title since 2005.

The Iron Bowl typically features one of the nation's best defenses. This year, both have defenses matching that description. No. 1 Alabama and No. 6 Auburn have been among the Southeastern Conference's stingiest teams going into Saturday's showdown.
